Enjoyed the discussion and agree that the last scene should have been post credit sequence. I found the beginning jarring with that iteration of Boots accompanied by that imagery. Ralph Fiennes added an extra layer to the story although the resolution with Spike’s mother was over a little too quickly. Looking forward to some more reviews.

Thanks Mike — I watched Kermode's review, but it was spoiler free. They said there would be another version with spoilers, but I could find it at the time.

I did the sensible thing. I paused the podcast on Friday, went to see the film yesterday, and listened to the rest this evening. I agree with Lucy. It's not really a horror film, it's more of an adventure film with horror elements.

I really enjoyed listening to your discussion and you were both more positive than I was about it.

I always want to enjoy Danny Boyle films more than I do, he has a tendency to do everything at the same pitch, so the dramatic notes seem frivolous and the frivolous bits seem more dramatic than they really are.

You can see a line from Trainspotting to this film: arresting set-peices, colourful characters, incredible stylistic flourishes with camera movement and dramatic moments peppered throughout. I think he has a tendency to WANT to say something profound about birth, death, and relationships, but never has the patience to actually do it. Without too much of a spoiler, Jodie Comer's dramatic bit is brushed under the carpet (he does the same with the baby dying in Trainspotting). She deserves better writing.

With Garland and Boyle, there's always a good film trying to get out of a music video.

Best zombie movie? Train to Busan (2016)
